Holmgren’s 8-10 Week Absence Tests Thunder’s Early Momentum

Chet Holmgren’s reported absence puts Oklahoma City’s 4-2 start under pressure, removing efficient scoring and substantial rebounding from a team on a two-game skid.
Chet Holmgren is out 8-10 weeks with a patellar tendon tear, NBA.com reports. For an Oklahoma City Thunder team sitting at 4-2 and carrying a two-game losing streak, the news puts a sharper edge on an early challenge: stopping the slide without Holmgren’s production.
His latest season averages show why that is a significant assignment. Across 83 games played, Holmgren averaged 16.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists. The scoring matters, but the rebounding stands out just as clearly. Oklahoma City must now navigate an extended absence without a player whose statistical contribution reaches beyond putting points on the board.
Efficiency makes the offensive gap more demanding than the scoring average alone suggests. Holmgren shot 56.1% from the field and 36.2% from three-point range. Replacing his points is one task; matching that shooting efficiency is another. Those percentages also illustrate the breadth of his scoring contribution, with his three-point shooting adding another dimension to the production Oklahoma City will miss.
The Thunder’s record still offers a positive starting point: 4-2 is a winning mark, even with the current skid. But an 8-10 week absence turns the response into more than a short-term adjustment. The challenge is to preserve that winning footing while absorbing the loss of Holmgren’s scoring, rebounding and efficiency. His numbers make clear that this is not a one-category problem.
